The mountain looks down at your assembled group. You hear his thoughts whisper through the grey, flowing around your minds like water swirling around fixed boulders in a stream, a jumble that seems like the noise of many clashing senseless thoughts at first, and then for each of you suddenly congeals in you mind into coherent ideas and images, something like a voice in your mind, but more a communication.

Grey, you know he recognizes you as a Threnody, he cannot understand your human sense of loss, yet he protects all those who dwell beneath his gaze, and so to you he extends a sense of protection…almost like that of a father, the closest his immortal stone heart can get to showing such things

Hroth, he recognizes you have carried out the quest Fang Quiang had him relay those weeks ago before you left to Littlemountain. He extends the sense that he honors the evil you faced alone in battle, and that you have removed the spirit from this world. It is the closest way to convey a congratulations the immortal being can show.

Then, a sense that almost feels like pride, as a smile grinds over his rocky features. Again a wave of meaning washes over all of you. Fang Quiang hears the whispers of those he watches over. He sometimes picks up their thoughts, when he is not asleep or distracted, he sometimes hears their prayers. They have been praying for you, the people of Fanlu. The whispers he hears from the towns folk say you faced a great evil, stopped it from reaching Yunshan. The whispers say you defeated a powerful wujen…Akiba…he knows the name, and is pleased at this. The whispers say you left town and have not been heard from for 7 days…not a long time, but long for those who have taken you to heart. The prayers are for your safe return…and that the gods guide you. As you perceive these prayers, you begin to hear them in your minds, whispered in dozens of different voices, as if you were privy to all the thoughts, comments and prayers that contained your names or pertained to you.

You hear the voices of worried mothers speaking about you:
“Li Na, they saved my children…please, please give them your luck!”
“I don’t know why my sister ever moved to Littlemountain, but she is alive only because of those strangers”
“I pray to Fang Quiang to take them in, I will pray for them on the mountain tomorrow”
“His mother and father helped my grandmother pay for this home..I do hope the lord settles down and has a son, I’d feel safer with the elves back in that manor.”
    “Bring them back safe”
“They saved everyone in that little village, I’m sure they would do the same for us”
“The one called Tealia, the one with the great cat, she’s spirit-called for sure…she’s the one who banished the restless dead from the Howling Winds!”
“What if the Wu jen rise up to take revenge, will they be able to fight them, will they lead them to us?”
    “Guan Yin watch over them”
“Li Na, please make us lucky enough to have such heroes among us”
“Things have seemed lighter in the town since the young master of Threnody has returned…it is a good omen”
“They must have been sent by the gods”
“I’ve heard before of a golden haired elf maiden in shining armor and her unicorn god, my grand mother told me long ago such a hero saved the Woodsman Woods from evil spirits…it couldn’t be the same maiden, unless she is immortal like a spirit!”
“I hear the Keeper has blessed them, they must be good, the Keeper has always looked out for our good”

    The voices of children:
“I hear they bested the heroes of the shadow at scorpion”
“The one stern is big like a mountain, He’s got a magic black ax he cut through an entire tribe of bugbears in Littlemountain, just chopped them down like trees!
“I will be a hero like that”
“They’re calling the one named Caris The Golden Maiden, she’s a girl, but a hero as strong as any. I could be like that when I’m old enough”
“I want to be Grognak! He throws Fire like a wujen can, but is good like a monk!”
“You can be Grognak, but I get to be Tealia, shes beautiful and brave and has a heart of lightning!”
“Please Chu Jung, let me see them, I’ve never seen a real hero up close”
“The one named Stern rides a horse made of living stone, and can split an ogre in two with one swing of his axe!”
“Hroth wields a giant sword in each hand and is the strongest man alive! I hope if he ever fights in the Six points father will take me”
“Don’t worry little sister, no one’s going to attack Fanlu, Grognak blew up a whole tribe of gnolls with one magic fireball! Now they’re too scared of Grognak to ever mess with us again”
“Girls can too be heroes! Like the elf lady founders! Tealia rides a giant tiger and no one can tell her what to do! I’ll be a hero just like that, You’ll see!”
“Those blades must weigh as much as me, and he uses one in each hand…”
“My dad says elves can see the future, that’s why he summoned his barbarian friends, so he could stop Slag!
“I’ve got two sticks so I get to be Hrothgar! If I hit you, you have to die ok!”

    The Measured voice of men:
“I heard they left Town last week to finish off Slags whole tribe!”
“Well I heard the axe wielder saved the Hat Maker’s Family from certain death!”
“I Know they kept the raiders away, but will they honor the laws? Foreigners once saved the village of Shou Shan when my father was a boy, but then they took it over and killed half the men, including my grandpa.”
“She controls animals with her mind and changes the weather on a whim, if she likes us, maybe well get better planting season this year!”
“The Lord of Threnody returned just in time…they swore he reached across the whole village with magic and snatched the children right away from the raiders…the gods are with the lord of Threnody and his friends.
“A wizard among us would make the wu jen respect us…I say he’s good. It is time for wizards again, wizards that save villages, not take them over!”
“I only wish I could think her for healing my wife’s burns…I really have nothing to give one such as her”
“It was a misty night, I was at the tavern…spirit blooded thugs, not from here came to start trouble, they took them on with their bare hands gods bless them! Beat em’ all the way out of town!
“The wizard fights wu jen, so his magic must be good…?”
    “Evon trusts them….”
“I spoke with one of the refugees from Littlemountain, they say the big one, Hrothgar, when they rescued the villagers from the shrine, he challenged an evil spirit to single combat and defeated it! They watched it happen from inside the old shrine the spirits had locked them up in! Why after that, none of the spirits wanted to mess with them, only the inhuman bandits were dumb enough to attack them…and look what happened to them”
“Last summer Ning was burned to the ground by strangers..but these ones must be different, the Threnodys built this town, they must be friends if they are friends of the Threnodys”
“They travel with a healer, a lady of gold who wears shining armor…I heard she’s an elf, a good 1/2 spirit, like the master of the manner”
“I’ve heard they’re the ones who exorcised the evil spirits haunting the old monastery down the pass, maybe they are demon hunters too?!”
“It’s good for our town, we haven’t’ had heroes like that in a long time”
“Yes the other big one, he’s not just a warrior, a healer too…one of the men from littlemountain swears he brought his wife back from the edge of death…they were held hostage in their house…Stern galloped right through the door on his stone horse and saved the whole family!”
“I saw her, the Golden Lady, she is more beautiful than they say!”

You all stand there for a long time, you’re not sure how long, your minds swimming in the thoughts of others, when you are snapped out of it by a deep voice. The voice resonates through the bones of the mountain, speaks as if the whole of the mountain and the ground you stand upon resonated with the vocal chords. He speaks out loud to you.

    What you seek is granted…
    Hope.
    It is their hope.
The hope you have given my children that pays your way out of these mists now, and back to them..remember always.
Turn and go, walk down the path.
With each step, you will be closer to your world.

Grey turns just a bit as he calls back to you all, and as he turns back, that’s when you all see him, like a wall of stone blocking the path that leads off of the Founders Watch and up the mountain. What is strange is, it’s not like he just appeared, it’s more like he was standing their the whole time, out in the open but somehow unseen…nor does his sudden appearance startle your senses…it’s as if you knew he was there the whole time, recognized by your senses, but not by your eyes. None of this makes sense, but this is Yunshan, and you are in the presence of a powerful spirit. It’s almost as if Grey’s last word just brought him to your senses.

In Truth, it is just his leg that blocks the path. He towers 40 ft. high, one stony foot and rocky calve blocking the narrow path forward. His other leg, and indeed the left half of his towering body is phased into the cliff face. His eyes are like cooling embers, black, with the slightest halo of orange, more a shadow or warm color than a light. His features are grey like the mist, but the massive vein of obsidian that runs across his body from shoulder to groin, shines with a dark reflective gleaming.

    null
Look at the picture, imagine the obsidian stripe across the body. The tallest among you barely comes up to below his knee cap. One massive leg standing on the trail, the other lost in the sheer stone wall that shoots upward. His face looks down, head cocked like that of a curious animal, which seems like a curious kind of expression for such an imposing being to have.

Meela Bows Deeply, and in a voice that seems too alive, too exasperated and wonder-struck to come from a ghost says

It seems the mountain has come to us.

    February 22, 2015 at 1:18 pm #1238

The Broad stone ledge called Founders watch is set into the side of Old Black stripe, about 80 ft over the town. One side is rising natural stone walls of that massive rock dome, the other is dead-fall, looking north east out over the town of Fanlu. The edge is ringed by polished poles of dark hardwood, each foot of their heights carved like a different leering face, like a totem poles, and each topped with a long red flag. There is a graceful wooden archway, the style of this land, that frames the paths onto and away from Founders watch, whose ledge is like a look out point on the way up to the top of the mountain.

But all of this is just background, it’s the life sized statues that draw your attention, and hold it continuously as you approach, and finally pass under the gilded archway onto the Founders watch. Each is a master work, the years long project of a single master mason. The detail is stunning. Each seems to simmer with a subtle internal light, as if the stone were warmed from within, at first you’re not sure it’s there, the aura is so dim, but it is there.

These pictures are of the people who founded Fanlu decades ago. They are not exactly how the picture looks, but the pictures give an idea of what they looked like. They are arrayed in a semi-circle, as if embracing the view ahead of them, in order from closets to furthest:

    H
    Ryu Yoritomo: Fanlu’s Current Mayor.

Zhang Yoritomo: The Mayors Brother you think

Evon Threnodain: You have never heard him referred to by his last name, people just don’t call him by it around you..it is curiously similar to Threnody, if it were written in Ink you might think it a type O, but this is carved in stone, to be remembered as a part of him for all time. Here he is looking much younger, and generally more like an ass kicker than the laid back Evon of fine robes and tea you know.

Virith “Little Arrow” Threnody: You have no idea who this is, but he is obviously related to Grey…in fact, their is an eerie resemblance, not like a twin, but like that between two brothers who look alike one another.

Ryalli Threnody: Grey’s Mother… The sculptor gave her a regal look of calm, self assured focus, that reveals little else of the emotions that lie beneath. It could be mistaken as an aloof or vain expression, but is too sincere to be that…you have seen the same look on Grey’s face too many times…she does not look nearly as much like him as Virith, but the expression is all Grey…you find yourself in wonder at the mastery of this sculptor, that in stone, he caught an expression with such accuracy, that decades later, you can tie it to the same inherited personality of the living son. Some of you are also in awe of the power and relation of family. Ryalli, is no longer in this world.

Aelihir Threnody: Beside his wife, Grey’s father is captured in fine foreign attire, slight smile…hinting at warmth and happiness without looking obvious. The statues of heroes are usually given serious or determined expressions, that’s true of any statue in any land. He must have given the sculptor the liberty to show such emotion. He too is no longer alive.

Rythin Threnody: Older Brother to Grey’s Father, making him Grey’s Uncle. He is said to be an accomplished wizard, living somewhere in Yunshan to this day. Grey does not speak of him much, but then again, he generally has not spoken much about his family at all.

    null
Loannah Leafborn: There is something familiar about this beautiful elf’s face, but you have no idea who she is. You’ve never heard her mentioned as a founder before, or seen someone around town who might have been her.

Kito Taishan: Beside Loannah, crouched in warrior stance meant to convey focused humility, is a much younger looking statue of Kito.

Asagi O Yimjo: You’ve heard the name before from both Grey and Evon, but you don’t anything about this warrior frozen in stone.

Danjo Lo: A much younger depiction of the Keeper of Pacified Shadows, before he took that title or founded the House of Pacified Shadows. He is sitting in a position of meditation, looking slightly upwards with a look of self satisfied calm.

    Magic, favors, gold…not so different.

She speaks as you climb the trail up to Founders watch, a short jaunt, drop on one side, shadowy stone wall on the other. The trail winds along a short stretch of the Sleeping Mountains lower base, plunging up and down in short stretches at it winds. About every 30ft along the path a life sized statue stands, in a natural rock alcove, or on a spur that juts from the trail and hangs over the valley below. You’re still not very high up at all, but you feel high up.

Creatures from the underworld will trade in just about anything..but they love gold, because just having it keeps it out of the hands of mortals. Gold, silver, copper, it’s the pure metals, they are worth more to the underworld than they are even in the kingdoms you come from, where they are used to make coins.

This place is like neutral ground sort of…The spirits of nature are allowed to travel here, and ancestors too, so long as they are properly invited. Some underworld spirits, like the wretches, and the Grey Guides, they have license to use this place too. Not all underworld spirits are evil, the wretches are, the Grey Guides usually are not. Some underworlders are just outcasts, not evil, just not good enough for the heavens.

Usually ancestors, and even underworlders on this side, can be reasoned with. There are other things though, strange beasts that seem born to this place, and restless spirits too, they are the real dangers here.

Meela answers by nodding to Grog and Stern, and then walking on, in a moment she speaks

Just a caravan, not so different from what it might be on your side. That creature in the lead, the one who holds the chain, he was what they call a Grey Guide.

A little ways longer and she breaks off from the road heading out into the park like boulder field that sprawls along Fanlu’s south side, between Tradeway and the Sleeping Mountain. She moves around the boulders as if they are solid, not phasing through them. She continues as you go along.

This side would be an excellent place to travel, no walls, very little of anything at all in some places, if not for certain things. With the mists, no moon, no stars, no sun, no way to view things in context, it’s very easy to get lost, even if you do know the roads. Those Grey Guides know the ways. Anyone who can pay them can travel here safely, no one on this side messes with the Grey Guides and their charges. They are allowed to be here, you are not…he didn’t give us any trouble, perhaps, despite your current situation, you are lucky.

A bit of color comes into view, it’s as if the grass is taking on a dull green, the some of the rocks a muted brown, and the blossoms of a wild cherry tree ahead are allowed some of their pink hue. Then you see Red ahead, the red of flags, this is a place you’ve been before. A place you passed by weeks ago when you first went up to pay your respects to Fang Quiang. You realize you are all seeing much further than you could before. There is a trail that leads up the side of Old Black Strip, and near its base, a flat ledge large enough for a home, but left as a place to honor those who founded Fanlu. Grey statues dot the path, and stand in a line upon that rock ledge.

    Founder's Watch

Founders Watch, we’re very close now

    February 13, 2015 at 6:53 pm #1154

The axe wielder observers you with an iron stare, axe in one hand, chain in the other.

Meela speaks back to you in quite tones
“This is a caravan, they’re about to head down to the market below the city, I doubt they want any trouble from us”

You can hear deep throaty shouts and guttural complaints from the mists as some unseen group does whatever it is they are doing for about a minute. All through out the rattle of chains, the shifting and securing of equipment, and deep, strangely chitinous sounds, then a call, the voice of that 2nd creature you think.

“Ready, lead on with no delay!”

With one last nod the axe wielder acknowledges your group, never taking his eyes off you. He slowly walks forward, but as he does, with each step, he also descends downward into the ground, as if treading down some unseen staircase. Then, lumbering from the mist come 6 behemoths, men with giant scorpian like lower bodies that creak as they shamble forward. Each bears arms, and a heavy load of sealed crates and chests upon it’s back, they are both caravan guard and beast of burden in one.

The axe wielder has now completely descended below the ground, in a moment he’ll be somewhere deep below and behind you, but the chain he held in his off hand stretches behind him and up out of the ground, and each of the beasts is connected to it by a clamp on it’s belt. They eye you with otherworldly suspicion, and a very recognizable, almost human kind of curiosity as they too descend into the earth before you. It’s probably obvious to them you’ve never seen anything like this, it’s obvious to you, some of them have never seen mortals this close and in the flesh. Last comes the merchant himself, the shifty, reptile bodied being. His darty nervous eyes seem to move between you all with spastic frequency until the very moment they vanish beneath the ground about 40ft ahead. You all stand in silence

A tall humanoid form, a massive pole ax in one hand, wielded presently like a walking staff, slowly approaches from out of the mist ahead, at about 60ft away you see him clearly, and get the impression there are other shapes behind him obscured in the mists, then you hear the creak of stiff leather, the rattle of gear confirming that impression

    “Good day Lady”
He makes a quick, practiced observation of your group, bows just a little, then focuses on Meela, addressing her as the leader

Meela speaks with level authority, but there is a nervous edge in her voice

“We gladly yield the road to you and your charge, route finder, we wish no trouble”
With this she bows, not a deep respectful bow, but a courteous one of acknowledgement, then glaces back at you all as if to relay things are under control.”

“Who would want to make trouble with all those mortal heroes….all that fine steel, strong muscle, proud sinew and defiant bone…I see no need to stain these grey lands red today, and you needn’t leave the road, this is about where we head down anyways lady”

A tall potbellied figure comes forward from behind the ax wielder. He is nearly 8 ft tall, and rotund, an impressive bestial form, yet he moves with a submissive, nervous, cowed nature. His greasy eyes dart across your group as he slinks up beside the axe wielder

    “Is…is there trouble Tutsu?”

“Oh I don’t think the lady and her friends are looking for any more trouble than they’re already in friend, time to go down”

The axe wielder produces a heavy looking coil of shimmering black chain from beneath his cloak, a coil no normal being could so easily carry. Grasping one end in his off hand, he hands the rest of the coiled chain, it must be dozens of feet long and very heavy, to the 2nd figure, who struggles a bit with the weight and looks annoyed at having to take it.

“Roll it out and hook them all up merchant” He speaks the axe wielder firmly.

The other figure struggles with the chain, letting it un-spool loop by loop as he walks back out of view into the mists behind, not before giving one last nervous, critical look at your party.

You all reach the small gate house that leads out of RedTown. From here founders way leaves Redtown and joins with Tradeway, which is like the main east west road though town. Redtown is high up on the hill side that is the west 1/2 of Fanlu, and looks east over the rest of Fanlu and th e lake beyond. It is a bit like a town within a town, surrounded by it’s own low wall, and separated from the rest of town by orchards, small parks, and expanses of almost rural land. The result is, you feel more like your leaving a town then moving to another part of town.

It’s not long traveling down the misty road that Meela motions for you to stop. To the left of the road, a group of shadowy workers is clearing a ditch, probably blocked up by debris from recent rains. Beyond them, a shadowy orchard. To the right, a normally green park on a hill side, where hundreds of large boulders stand like shadowy watchers…you contemplate Meela’s words from the night before, wondering if Fang Quiang might be watching unseen from one of those rocks.

“Be still, make no sudden movements, something is coming”

    February 13, 2015 at 2:31 pm #1141

With a smile she bows you all and wishes you a good night, then steps backwards through the wall behind her and into the small manor you are camped outside of.

That strange night, you all sleep very well, it has to be something magical about the garden or statue. You all have very interesting dreams as well, which will be delivered to each of you via email.

Dawn comes, only slightly less grey than the night. You wake and eat a quick simple meal of rations. Within all of you is a renewed sense of purpose and anticipation, that makes the meal even shorter. Most of you take a bite of or two of dried meat, and you feel done, ready to go. Some of you long for a beer, or something to take the edge off. You feel well rested, safe, but more than ready to move on.

Meela drifts gracefully into the garden.

    “it’s time”

Through the wall and out onto Founders Way you go. You start for a moment at the shadowy human forms moving about, thinking of the Wretches you saw last night, but they are just the shadows of harmless commoners, shop owners opening up, couriers delivering messages, people starting their days on the other side. Meela leads the way at the pace of a swift walk. Curiously, she makes it a point not to walk though any of the shadows of people you all pass

Here I will pause for an hour to let any of you pipe in if you wish before I continue.

    February 13, 2015 at 12:13 pm #1138

It is subtle, but not hard to detect once you get used to it. The mists seem a little darker, the wards on the other side seem to glow a little brighter. Let’s hope you don’t have the time to gt used to any of this.

It’s good he knows of you. If he’s bothered to show himself that’s huge, especially if it wasn’t out of anger. I can tell you a few things about dealing with nature spirits. Here’s a tip, spirits mostly avoid mortals or just watch them from this side. They never show themselves to mortals unless there’s a reason. If they don’t just right out attack they might want to help, but spirits are picky about helping, they want to be asked, and they want the asking mortals to make a case. Even if they want to help you, they get impatient and hold back their help if the mortals don’t just get to the point and make a good case of why they deserve help. Spirits just want to hear you make your case, lay your cards on the table, be straight up and bold, yet humble….they want to see it as obvious that you know they are doing you a big favor. Spirits have a lot of pride and follow traditions, and that’s just theirs. Sometimes, you even have to grovel, but most of the time you can get a lot just by giving the spirits what they want. respect, thanks, a little praise to stoke their ego. It’s just like dealing with nobles really. They are the kings of their domains, and they feel constantly encroached upon by the gods above and mortals below…If they’re not mad as hell, in which case the best option is to run or fight, than they just want to be treated like royal benefactors.

If you have no reason to think The mountain is angry with you, than that’s how you should approach him. Also, as for stating your case, be ready to tell him some good you’ve done for his realm, and maybe some good you plan on doing…like the help you’re doing for my family, but don’t make him ask. Tell him, state your case. Remember, he’s doing you a favor, and you have know idea how to appreciate or know what it’s costing him if he does. Always assume you are asking for much, and you will come across as the proper kind of humble.

Another thing on that note, spirits live forever. This is there home, and you are all temporary guests just passing though. Even if you’re native to these lands, you are born into them, you live, and then you pass out of them like me. You may only get one chance to ask a spirit for help, so don’t blow it, or you’re out of luck. They are extremely patient with almost everything except for mortals, whom they don’t waste a lot of time on if they don’t think it’s worth it.

    Am I making sense here?

    February 13, 2015 at 10:57 am #1133

It’s best not to travel at night, that’s when spirits of the underworld are out and about. You’ll be safe here, and I require no sleep, so I can make sure of that.

I have no idea if you know Fanlu, if you did, you could just follow the roads up to the mountain, but if not, I could lead you straight there…we learn to feel our way through the mists, to reach the places we have in mind. This plan is the greatest advice I can give without knowing more. You know of Fang Quiang, so, does he know of you? Does he owe you any favors? Have some reason to like you? Spirits don’t appreciate strangrs asking them for big favors, they’re just like people in that respect, yet, sometimes they’re happy to help if they know you.

    February 12, 2015 at 6:52 pm #1132

Meela’s spirit aloofness and mystery seems to fade away as a very human expression washes over her face with a heartening smile..releif, gratefulness, hope.

I would be so grateful for that…She lives here, in this small manor house in Redtown. Her name is Leia Mensheng, but most would call her lady Mensheng. The manor is ringed my magical sigils. Some are hidden in the walls, but two that were visible, the one that should be hanging over the front door, and another at the back of the manor above the gate that leads into the vegetable garden. I can only think they must have been stolen not long ago. She is rich in things, but poor in fluid funds if you understand. She is rather attached to her things too, too much so to sell anything even though she should. Evon would help her with funds, but she hates him and is too proud to ask. She partially blames him for my death. She would rather prey and put her faith in the spirits, but in the end, it is the job of mortals to manage their affairs, we can only help so much… If you could somehow convince her to take action, or find out where those symbols went well, listen, in the morning, I could lead you through the mists to the mountain, I can feel my way there. I’d have to come right back, but it might save you some time…I’m not sure what else I could offer but my eternal…She catches herself and smiles embarrassed at the literal pun shes almost made…she pauses to recompose the statementI would be very grateful

    February 12, 2015 at 5:51 pm #1129

You know I haven’t had a conversation like this in a long time…I’m a little rusty. If you’re talking about the battle with the Wretches…most people lose that eventually, it’s just a part of how things are.

Specifically, I’m here to protect my daughter and grand children. They’re home has weak spots, places where there should be protection but there’s not. They’ve been having trouble as a result, and they preyed so hard for protection that I heard them, so I made a petition to come here and do what I could. For now, all I can do is watch and protect. I have no idea how to get back to the world of the living, or I’d just go there and tell them what’s wrong. I know some spirits can, but I haven’t learned that trick. Sometimes, they see me when they dream, but when they wake up they can’t remember the dream, or they don’t realize what I’m trying to say. Do you know how to get back? I’m afraid all I can do for you is mostly what I’ve already done, I’ve led you to a safe place. I can tell you what I know of this side, maybe it will help…

    Yes

Mortals are vulnerable to many things when they sleep, unless they protect themselves. The thing those wretches carry is horrid. It is toxic, poisoning the heart, and yet it is not a poison, so there is no antidote. It debilitates the health, spreading like a disease, but it is not a disease, so no healer can cure it. It hangs over the victim like a dark cloud, bringing struggle and bad luck to all their days, but it is not a curse, and so no priest can make atonement for the afflicted. It cripples like a wound, and yet it is not a wound…there is no easy way, and no sure way to heal it…most never recover, not fully anyways.”

She trails off and falls into silence, as if becoming depressed by her own words, looking down at the ground.

Meela waits for all the introductions to finish, bowing her head slightly to acknowledge each one, then after a pause, continues.

Those things I chased off are called wretches. Each one of them carries a pouch filled with one of the most terrible substances a mortal can come into contact with. They prowl the nights on this side, looking for unprotected mortals that sleep on your side. Some you hardly see them at all, it’s as if they stay home. Other nights, they fill the city streets, swarming and fighting for the chance to poison even just one mortal. They look for any weak spot they can find. Most nights, they fail, sometimes they get to someone.”
